Cleaning and Maintaining Your Siding

Once siding is installed and a functioning part of your house, it can be easy to forget about it and let daily wear and tear start to ruin it.  Whether you have had your siding for a long time or just had it done recently, it will inevitably need to be cleaned.  Fortunately, the proper cleaning methods will keep your siding in great condition, allowing it to last for many more years.

Using the proper cleaning methods will not only get your siding into the proper shape, but it will ensure that it lasts as long as possible.  There are a few tips that you should always follow in order to keep your siding polished and inviting.  However, you will first want to make sure that you have the right tools for the job.  Suggested tools include:

  • Power washer/Pressure Washer:  Typically, power washers or pressure washers are the quickest and easiest tool for getting the job done.  You can buy one at a home improvement store or rent one if you don’t plan on using it very often.
  • A Nylon Brush with Stiff bristles and a telescoping pole
  • Another nylon brush for handheld use
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Protective eye  wear
  • A Bucket

Once you have the right tools, following some general suggestions will help the process run smoother and be as effective as possible.  These suggestions include:

  • Use the appropriate cleaners: Although you have a variety of different options when it comes to siding cleaners, Jomax is one which we recommend for effective cleaning and mildew removal.  If you want to choose a simpler route, basic soap, water, and a little bleach will often do the trick.  When using these products, be sure to use the protective gloves and eye wear.
  • Take your time: Giving yourself enough time to do the job thoroughly and completely will avoid mistakes and extend the time between cleanings.  Make sure you clean all areas to avoid uneven buildup and an undesired look for your home.
  • Consider a professional:  Although you may be able to do the job yourself, a professional company may be able to do it better.  Weigh your options and decide what would be the best decision for your specific situation.

At Cipriani Construction, we want your siding to last for as long as possible.  By following these simple steps and using your best options, your siding should stay in great condition.
