Winterize your home in the Fall

Before you know it, snow will be falling and ice will be forming.  Instead of dealing with your homes Winterization in the cold and unpleasant weather, start preparing it for the colder season in the Fall.

Tending to smaller issues as they arise or before they get worse will prevent larger and more expensive repairs in the future.  Some important things to do in order to get your home ready for Winter include:

  • Fix the leaky roof – While the weather is still rainy and not snowy, find the source of the leak by observing where the water comes in during a rainstorm. Once you’ve accomplished this, you can then patch up the spot on your own or by hiring a professional.
  • Clean the gutters – To avoid ice build up in the winter, clean out your gutters early so that the ice can run off.  If you live near trees, you may want to wait till the end of fall to do this so that you can remove all of the leaves.  Also be sure to check your downspouts.
  • Check the window seals – There’s nothing like feeling the summer breeze coming through the windows.  However, with the breeze comes dirt and debris in the window seals.  Make sure to clean the seals for high efficiency and properly working windows.  Also, replace any damaged seals.
  • Wrap up the pipes – Go in your basement or underneath your house to see which pipes need insulation or any insulation that needs to be replaced.  You will need to measure the length of the pipes before insulating them.  It’s best to wrap them up before the cold weather is present.
  • Check the deck – After all of the furniture is put away, give your deck a solid cleaning by giving it a good sweep, then power wash it and apply a coat of water-sealant.  An unprotected deck will get damaged in the winter.  You could also do this in the summertime as well to extend the life of your deck.

Don’t let your house go without Winterization.  It’s important to prepare your home for the harsh cold weather and icy, snowy conditions.  By doing the above maintenance and repairs, you and your home will be kept safe and sound in the winter.
